Privacy & your data
SpeakFlix is made for teenagers, so it collects as little as it can and never sells or shares data for advertising. Plain-language summary:
What we store, and where
- Your account: a user name, a password (stored only as a secure hash), the name you choose to show, and your settings. No e-mail address, phone number or real name is required.
- Your learning history on the SpeakFlix server: the steps you finish, your speaking attempts and their transcripts, AI feedback, mistakes, phrases, badges and practice time. It is stored so it is there on every device you sign in on.
- Recordings stay in your browser. They are kept only if you turn on "Keep my recordings", only on that device, and are never uploaded - unless you press "Transcribe my recording", which sends that one recording to the speech-to-text service and does not store it on SpeakFlix.
- Usage counts for AI requests (how many, how many tokens, the estimated cost) to keep within limits. Not the text.
AI and your words
- No AI: nothing you say leaves SpeakFlix.
- Your own AI chat (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude): you copy a prompt into your own account there and paste the result back. What you share there is under that service's own rules; SpeakFlix cannot see the chat.
- SpeakFlix AI coach: only after you agree in Settings, and only when you press a button, the text of your answer (or the conversation) is sent to the AI provider the site uses (Anthropic's Claude, or OpenAI) to make feedback. The provider processes it under its API terms. Your learning history stays on SpeakFlix.
- What the coach remembers: with SpeakFlix AI, the coach notes a few everyday things you said (films you like, what you did, plans) and your recurring mistakes, so it can talk about them next time, like a friend. It never notes names, your school, address or anything private. Settings shows every note; you can delete any of them or switch the memory off.
- Browser speech recognition ("Dictate", "Speak") is done by your browser, which sends the sound to its maker (Google, Microsoft or Apple).
Parents and teachers
A parent or teacher can make your login or link to your account with a code. They then see your progress (days, scores, mistakes, phrases) but not your recordings, and they cannot change your work. You can remove a link in Settings.
No tracking, no public profiles
There are no ads, no third-party trackers, no public profiles and no leaderboards. Videos from YouTube load only when you press play (via youtube-nocookie.com).
Your controls
In Settings → Backups & your data you can see what is stored, download everything (JSON, CSV, a readable report), import a backup, and delete transcripts, conversations, all history, or your whole account. SpeakFlix never deletes your learning history on its own.
